Some of the greatest moments on the water don’t always involve the fish we catch. I, like many others, love those days of fishing when the bite is on and the fish are plenty.

What do you do then when the fishing is slow?

How much time do you spend switching flies, changing up presentations and moving on to the next bit of fishy looking water without any luck?

Do you continue to hold on to hope and exhaust yourself cast after cast or do you take a short break and see what your surroundings have to offer.

I will occasionally let a slow day of fishing completely ruin my mood and sometimes my whole day by driving myself crazy, flinging cast after cast hoping to figure out what the fish are doing.

This doesn’t help at all.

Sure, thinking straight and making the most out of every cast is important on slow days.

But if you find yourself tossing lazy casts, switching flies too often and getting frustrated, take a little break and try some of these activities to enhance your day and help you stay sharp out on the water.

You never know, you just might experience some amazing moments you can’t quite put into words, I know I have.

Go for a swim: One of the wonderful things about fly fishing is that it can lead you to some pretty spectacular swimming holes. Ditch the waders and join your fishy friends in the cool refreshing waters.
