FLY SELECTION

A wireworm or San Juan is most often our choice for the bottom “anchor” fly. We typically tie worms with beads or wire for extra weight. Other large flies like leeches (we love Simi Seal leeches) can be used to get the other flies to the bottom. Other common flies we use vary seasonally. For example, in spring girdle bugs in sizes #6 - 10 match both skwalas and golden stones. Different sizes of pheasant tails can be used to match the varying mayflies seen spring through fall on the Bow, and larger sizes make a good skwala imitation as well. Another staple late spring through fall is a caddis larvae. At this stage they are found hugging rocks and debris. Olive bodied nymphs, tied on curved hooks with a black bead are both effective and durable. The midge also follows this life cycle, and the worm mentioned above is representative of its larval form. Midge pupa are also important in smaller sizes #18 to 24.
