An unanticipated highlight of our trip was the opportunity for interaction with members of the Peigan nation. As Norma prepared our evening feast, she elaborated on her nation’s rich history, something that no Canadian textbook does with any nuance. Equally resonating was the sense of intimacy and respect that the Blackfoot nation had for nature and her inhabitants. It was a dependency born of need and sustained by nurture. I fell asleep in my tipi to the rhythm of sacred winds and a renewed sense of appreciation for our First Nation brothers and sisters.
