In riffles and pocket water, it's often an up and across cast with a mend to drift the fly over the holding water. Don't be surprised if a fish follows as your line reaches downstream and attacks on the swing. I've had many explosive takes as the fly swings along the top at the end of a drift. So let it, you never know!

I often approach sudden depth changes differently. Sometimes a shallow, gravel shoal will give way to a steep plunge into a deep hole. Trout will lurk below and wait for anything to drift over the top and then devour it.
