WHAT ARE BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR PEAS ?
• Seeding Date . We recommend planting peas as early as possible , the same time that you would plant oats or barley .
• Best Soil . The best soil is well drained with pH levels of 5.5- 8.0 . Soil fertility should be around 35-40 lbs / acre of soil and fertilizer ( if needed ) Nitrogen . Avoid soils that have poor drainage or that have high levels of Nitrogen .
• Soil Temp . Field peas can germinate when soil temperatures are at 40 ° F . Look at the “ Accelerated Aging ” test to determine how hardy that seed lot will be when planting in cooler temperatures .
• Seeding Rate . Dryland seeding rate is 375,000 PLS / acre and is calculated using the seed germination & seed count . Seeding depth is 2-3 ”; based upon at least 0.50 ” of soil moisture above the seed .
• Rotation . To avoid contamination and disease issues rotational frequency is best at least four years for all pea types ( green and yellow ). Some growers get away with three but no less than that is recommended .

WHAT COULD GO WRONG ?
• Weather . Too much rainfall can really hurt peas but also too little hurts them too . Rainfall between 12 ” -18 ” is probably fair to say for “ ideal ”.
• Insects . Aphids occasionally can reach economic thresholds . Grasshoppers and lygus bugs can pose problems too , but that isn ’ t too common .
• Disease . Powdery mildew and fusarium wilt are the “ biggies ”.
