KEYS TO RAISING GOOD , OPEN-POLLINATED CORN

• Pay close attention to seeding depth , planting 1.75-2 in . deep , especially with large-kernel varieties
• Plant untreated seed into warm soil (> 55˚F ).
• Lower overall plant populations , especially when raising for grain ( 20,000 – 28,000 )
• Choose isolated fields to avoid cross pollination
• Stalk strength is weaker compared to hybrid corn due to lowered lignin content
• Harvest grain on-time to prevent stalk lodging and ear drop
• Open-pollinated varieties typically yield less than hybrids
• Open-pollinated grain can be saved and planted for seed for next year that will be true to type
• We have received anecdotal reports of higher grain nutrition and silage quality with openpollinated varieties vs . hybrids
ORGANIC & UNTREATED SWEET CORN
It is recommended to plant untreated and organic sweet corn seed into warm soil ( at least 65-75 ° F ) at 1-in . depth . Early planting into cool , wet soils can result in poor germination due to fungal disease competition and seedling blights .
