38 WARM SEASON ANNUAL FORAGES

Test Your Forages

Prussic Acid Poisoning : Drought and frost can cause prussic acid to build up in sorghums and sudans ( not millet ). DO NOT graze or green chop sorghum or sorghum-sudan until the plant is 18- 20 ” tall . Also do not graze or green chop for 10 days after a frost .

Chopping sorghum-sudangrass for silage . Ladwig Farms , Freeborn County Minnesota
Nitrate Poisoning : Occurs when cattle or other ruminants consume forage with high nitrate content . Nitrates can build up in all forage and weed species because of : 1 ) Over fertilization with manure or nitrogen , 2 ) Drought or shady conditions that limit plant growth and 3 ) Overgrazing .

Millets

Japanese Millet *
Upright annual grass that grows quickly with adequate moisture and fertility . Much finer stems than pearl millet or sorghums . When cut before heading the protein can range from 14-20 % and customers report that it is palatable . Can be cut 2 or 3 times . In a single-cut system it can reach 5 ’ in height .
Best Use : Hay , pasture , and silage . Excellent feed for cattle , horses , and sheep . As with all grasses , earlier cutting leads to higher quality , lower yields ,
and more drying time . No prussic acid problems . Adaptations : Best growth on good soils and requires good fertility . Tolerant to wet soils and will survive standing water .
Requirements : Cut before heading and leave 6 ” of stubble for faster recovery . Does not perform well on droughty or low fertility soils . Not frost-tolerant . Planting Date : Mid-May – early June ( soil 62 o +) Seeding : 25-35 lbs / acre ½ ” -1 ” deep .
Conventional Untreated __$ 26.00 / 50 lb bag
Hybrid Pearl Millet *
Erect annual bunchgrass which can grow up to 10 ’ tall . Used as a multi-cut , warm-season forage grass . Much coarser stems than Japanese Millet , but can produce more tonnage . The forage can be high in protein , is highly digestible and has no prussic acid problems .
Best Use : Hay , pasture , and silage . Most frequently used in beef cow / calf and dairy operations . Adaptations : Likes good ground but can produce under low rainfall and low soil fertility . Requirements : Leave 6 ” of stubble for faster recovery after cutting or grazing .
Planting Date : Mid-May – early July ( soil 62 o +) Seeding : 12-20 lbs / acre ½ ” -1 ” deep . Untreated Hybrid Pearl Millet *
• Tall , high yielding variety ____________________ $ 54.00 / 50lb bag
Untreated ExCeed BMR Hybrid Pearl Millet NEW !
• BMR for improved feed intake , higher digestibility , and more milk
• Dwarfing gene for increased leaf to stem ratio and standability
• Excellent drought tolerance and disease resistance ___________________ $ 70.00 / 50 lb bag
Foxtail Millet *
Commonly used as a single-cut emergency hay crop because it can be ready to cut in 50-60 days . Fast growing annual grass growing to 5 ’. Fine quality forage easy to hay . Harvest in boot stage .
Adaptations : Likes good ground but tolerates tough , unfavorable conditions because of drought tolerance and early maturity .
Planting Date : Mid-May – early July ( soil 62 o +) Seeding : 20-25 lbs / acre . ½ ” -1 ” deep . Untreated German Millet ____$ 22.00 / 50 lb bag
Proso Millet *
The quickest-growing millet most often raised for singlecut forage or grain . One of the easiest , fine quality millets to hay . Fast maturing ; forage ready to cut in 40-50 days and can produce 2-3 tons of DM . Can produce a grain crop in 70 to 90 days . Best Use : Excellent for emergency low-input warmseason forage ( hay , silage , green-chop ). Cut in boot stage before heading for best quality . Catch crop where others have failed . Expect little regrowth . Adaptations : Low water requirements , good drought tolerance
Planting Date : Mid-May – early July ( soil 62 o +) Seeding : 20-30 lbs / acre . ½ ” -1 ” deep . Conventional Untreated ___ $ 24.00 / 50lb bag Organic ______________$ 38.00 / 50 lb bag

Sorghum-Sudangrass *

A hybrid cross between sorghum and sudangrass and intermediate in size and yield . Fast-growing , highly productive , multi-cut annual grass to maximize summer forage . High plant rates produces fine stem which dry easier with increased quality . Can grow 8 ’ tall if left uncut . Protein of 9-14 %, but less energy than corn silage because it lacks grain .
Best Use : Best suited for hay , grazing , green chop , baleage , or silage .
Adaptation : Good soils but is drought tolerant . Likes hot weather . All hybrids we sell are resistant to downy mildew and anthracnose .
Requirements : Harvest between 40-50 ” ( boot stage ) for highest quality feed . Cut 6 ” above ground for best regrowth . Larger stems make drying for hay more difficult than for sudangrass . Manage potential for prussic acid and nitrate build-up
Planting Date : Mid-May – early July ( soil temps 62 o +) Seeding : 20-30 lbs / acre drilled , 25-35 lbs / acre broadcast . High end of the rate for hay production . ¾ ” -1½ ” deep .
