At this year's GJCL Coin Wars, I will be supporting the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an international organization dedicated to helping refugees all across the world whose lives were damaged by war, natural disasters, and other crises. The organization was created at the end of World War II in 1942 to help refugees from Germany, Spain, Italy, and France. Since then, the IRC has extended to many parts of the world, initiating relief programs in numerous crises, including Hurricane Katrina and the 2014 Ebola virus outbreak. The IRC provides not only basic needs such as food and clean drinking water, but also services such as medical care, counseling, and educational opportunities to help refugees rebuild their lives. https://www.rescue.org/.

The charity I will be supporting is the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation is dedicated to free educational content in all languages. Wikipedia’s dedication to free access of unbiased information makes it easier for anyone to find and share what they know. In addition, the Wikimedia Foundation supports additional free knowledge projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and many more.
As a student, I’ve used wikipedia countless times to assist on homework, prove something to a friend, or satisfy a sporadic question. I am so excited to announce that, this year at state convention, I will be representing the National Alliance on Mental Illness for Coin Wars! NAMI is a national grassroots advocacy organization that helps increase awareness of mental illnesses and provides support to families and individuals affected my mental illnesses throughout our nation. NAMI provides funds for education, research, and generally helps push our government towards policies that will benefit these families and individuals. If you or someone you know have been impacted by a mental illness, you know how debilitating these illnesses can be and how often people suffering from mental illnesses are marginalized and ostracized in our society. Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) was founded in 2004 to help North Korean refugees hiding out in China and to resettle them in the United States or South Korea so that they can avoid being forcibly taken back to North Korea. LiNK has so far has done 733 rescue missions, saving over thousands of refugees. Lets change the narrative on human rights.
