Walton High School

Although not even a month has passed since the beginning of the school year, the Walton JCL is already active. With events such as the annual Walton Kickoff Certamen Tournament Certamen and the East Cobber Parade fast approaching, Certamen players held their first advanced practice of the year, the WJCL officers met to plan the first Latin Club meeting, and all students started their lessons in Latin, whether for the first year or the fifth year. Most important of these numerous activities, however, comes from the new four-story school building.

The $48,000,000 building features a massive lecture hall and an open Latin classroom. The lecture hall is an open, rectangular room with a projector as well as two whiteboards separated by an interactive board. Rather than the standard rectangular desk, eighth graders line rows and rows of connected tables. This year’s number of students is staggering even compared to the usual number of eighth graders who take Latin I.

All of these changes are striking compared to what most Latin students at Walton have experienced as eighth graders. Instead of cramming into a single classroom with no windows, current eighth graders are able to enjoy learning about Caecilius and his family in a natural and comfortable environment. And besides the obvious differences in furniture and location, the new location has an indescribable feeling of novelty that is inspiring for all members of the WJCL.

With the new building comes hope of a better Walton JCL. Walton plans to continue to improve in a number of categories including academics, service, and spirit throughout the year during events such as Fall Forum and Convention. The new building is one of many positive changes to occur to the WJCL. We are extraordinarily grateful for the building and, as always, are hopeful for the future of the WJCL.

The eighth graders take a break from their Latin I studies to watch a promotional Latin Club video.
