Walton

This year, Walton High School has been reaching out to the community as well as continuing our annual traditions.

In the fall, we hosted the Walton Kickoff Certamen tournament, in which thirty-eight teams participated. The event was coordinated by our sponsor, Mr. Farnsworth, but it also featured WJCLers reading, scorekeeping, and timing the rounds. Many WJCLers enjoyed helping out at the tournament, which wouldn’t have been possible without their enthusiasm and diligence!

Our monthly Latin club meetings feature tournaments such as rock, paper scissors, arm wrestling, and the classic grape-eating contest. During the grape-eating contest, four-time champion Donian Chyong set an astounding record of eating thirty grapes in thirty seconds, a feat that rivals the ancient heroes of old! When asked about the secret of his marvelous technique, Chyong, in the manner of a true grape-eating sage, replied, “ Eat grapes like you never want to see another grape again.”

Walton JCL, to give back to the community, has been engaging in weekly tutoring sessions with Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School, which boasts over two hundred members in its program. Every Thursday, WJCLers have been going to Cristo Rey to help the students review grammar concepts, translations as well as to prepare for the National Latin Exam. These efforts have been successful as the students are not only making significant improvements in their Latin classes, but are also developing an appreciation for the classics.

These past months have been eventful for Walton, and we continue to seek to improve ourselves and to enrich others. Crescant scientia benficiumque; vita excolatur
