AMBITION & COMMUNICATION SKILLS WANTED MAYES PLUMBING AND HEATING does general plumbing installa- tion and service repair work, as well as heating and air conditioning service and repairs. The company has been in business in Springdale since 1977, when it was started by Kenny and Debbie Mayes. Their son, Nathan, now runs the business along with his wife, Kari, and his sister, Jaymee. “We treat our team like family,” Nathan Mayes says. “We care about what’s going on with each other’s families and take care of each other.” The Mayes Plumbing family is made up of 12 employees, including HVAC technicians and plumbers. “We have five master plumbers on staff, but we need more apprentices to learn the business,” Mayes explains. “Apprentice plumbers train on the job while attending classes one or two nights each week. The process can take four years and results in earning a journeyman license, which means you can work without su- pervision and earn more money. The company pays for its employees to take apprenticeship and HVAC training classes. To be an apprentice at Mayes, you must be dependable and have good professional customer service skills. “Our team members need to be able to communicate with the customer and make sure they’re sat- isfied,” Mayes says. You also need to have appropriate time manage- ment skills. The company helps 25 to 30 customers each day. Mayes says the company looks for people who aren’t afraid to accept a challenge. “We take on jobs that other companies may not be able to handle. Some of our customers come to us because another plumber referred them to us for a difficult job.” Mayes takes on each challenge with his team; working in the field alongside his employees to make sure the job gets done.
