and became interested in hospital administration.”
Powell continued working as a patient care technician in the emer-
gency department while he earned a bachelor’s degree in organi-
zational management, but realized he needed to make a change
to reach the next step in his career. “My supervisor helped guide
me and recommended I gain some leadership experience, so I left
and took a job as a manager at a retail store. About a year later, I
returned to my role as a PCT in the emergency department at Mer-
cy.” His hard work soon earned him a promotion to trauma registrar,
where he was charged with collecting information for a statewide
database that tracks care for patients with certain types of injuries.
Less than a year later, he was promoted again to his current role.
Powell sees a future at Mercy. “I would love to eventually be a
hospital CEO, and I’m thinking about getting my master’s degree. For
anyone who’s interested in health care or any other kind of career,
don’t be afraid to start small and take time to figure out what you want
to do. If you think you might want to be a nurse, start out as a CNA. It
will make you a more rounded person and a better nurse.”
He says the sense of family at Mercy helped him achieve his goals.
“There is a different spirit here than anywhere else. There is a love for
your co-workers and a love for the patients. It’s really about those
special moments when you can interact with the patients and see
you’re making a difference.”
Part of the Mercy difference includes tuition reimbursement to help
continue your education, and benefits like paid time off, medical,
dental and vision insurance, and sick leave. To learn more about the
