The Voice of Innkeeping Vol 2 Issue 2 June Summer 2017 | Page 7

I know I am preaching to the choir here …… but I had a recent experience that’s why I am asking the question, what images do you see when someone says B&B? I own a one suite B&B and I host small weddings. I don’t get much B&B traffic but 12 weddings a year keeps me very busy and happy.

I had a recent wedding and the couple was from near the North Pole… seriously northern Ontario and in the middle of NOWHERE. They flew to Toronto and came to their wedding, which was planned by the way over the phone and Internet. When the groom told his dad he was hosting the wedding at a B&B apparently his dad’s reaction wasn’t good and his dad thought it would be a drab venue. When I was told all this I said, “Really?” I then asked if his dad envisioned Victorian settees and faded wallpaper, he said yes. Wow what's with that?

There are thousands and thousands of amazing B&Bs and truth be told most of which he envisioned are extinct! And trust me they don’t have faded wallpaper anywhere, mine included. As it turned out they were pleasantly surprised, dad included and thrilled with their son's choice.

So to all of you B&B owners out there, you all know the truth keep spreading the word and the new description of B&BS is: swanky, sophisticated, country chic are just a few descripts that come to my mind… all of

which are pretty awesome!

PS Thanks to Rick Newman and Peter Scherman for suggesting some future articles “Upping your B&B Game – Ideas on how to turn your B&B into a Boutique Style Inn.

If you have any suggestions for articles, please send them my way. And there will be no mention of faded wallpaper! Any suggestions for article please send the my way [email protected]
