This is a busy time of year for me so I get many calls. I do have an online availability calendar but you can’t physically book online…. I know… long story. I got a call from an older gentleman he told me he and his wife have sold their house and are looking for accommodation while waiting to get into a nearby senior’s condominium. He added it could be a few months. I said yes I do have availability and I was driving could I call him back. I did a few hours later and we discussed price of which he said he’d get back to me. 45 minutes later he called and said he’d like to bring over the $500 deposit, I said sure.
For some reason I have no idea but I Googled his name I guess only for the reason it sounded familiar. Well shock wouldn’t begin to describe what I found, he apparently had been arrested for making child pornography and appeared in court in the early spring of this year. I thought my computer was going to melt. I NEVER have Googled any guest before NEVER! So a quick call to my lawyer and she said find a reason or excuse not to rent to him. You don’t want the media to find out that he is staying with you and people egging your house or damaging it further.
So I called him back and the actress in me played the, ‘Oh I’m sorry I didn’t realize I already had a reservation for that time period.’ As disappointed as he was I thought I had dodged a bullet so-to-speak. I also realized that as he has only been charged if I didn’t rent to him and told him why I am sure in the law somewhere he could have sued me for discrimination of some sort and won because he hadn’t been convicted yet! But that is a different story I’m sure. I thought that was the end of it but two weeks later I get a call and it’s him again asking if I can rent to him even for two weeks. I said I am sorry I can’t as my business is set up for 30 days and over only. I could sense he was getting anxious and then I replied, “If anyone cancels I will certainly call you.” He seemed very relieved and hung up. I now have memorized the name it’s ingrained in my brain if he should ever ring my phone again. In the meantime the Academy of Motion Pictures should be sending me my Oscar any day!
