The Voice of Innkeeping Vol. 2 Issue 1 Spring 2017 | Page 23

Start-up, transaction and other fees are an unavoidable reality in terms of your costs, however you will want to make sure your processor is not charging you excessively. “All processors pay the same fees to the bank card companies (Visa/MasterCard/Discover),” says Tom. “The only question is how much your processor is marking up those fees.”

“Just about every credit card sale these days is ‘surcharged’ in one way or another. Most processors add surcharges to these surcharges so they make a profit. I don't do that. Any surcharge that the card companies charge is passed through at cost.”

As an independent contractor, Tom does not have to answer to anyone dictating how much to charge. “I have basically had the same rates for the last 17 years or so and I also have clients who have been with me for 17 years or more. While they continually get calls from my competitors, it is rare that any of those competitors want to drop their rates to match mine.”

Processing for the lodging industry is more complex than the retail industry. This means innkeepers should work with a credit card processor who understands the particular needs of the hospitality business. Trust in your rep is crucial.

Tom is available to explain credit card processing in laymen's terms. He conducts numerous workshops and in-person discussions for groups around the country for various associations and is always willing to discuss your processing needs.

He firmly believes in educating clients on the ins and outs of credit card processing to help them make the best possible choices for their business, maximize sales and potentially reduce costs.

“One of the biggest things in the industry today is obviously online reservation systems. I readily work with the majority of those supplying online processing, gateways, cell phone processing, iPad processing, and anything else that comes along.”

Tom has helped hundreds of businesses across the country reduce processing costs, better understand credit card processing and assist with technical problems. Contact Tom to determine if his excellent personal service and reasonable fees fit with the needs of your business.
