Sought After Seedlings
D
o you remember when
you drove through the
countryside and the water sprayers in the fields
reticulated with a rhythm that was
soothing, and the spray moving
upward in the wind looked like
cooling comfort?
Drive through parts of the country
now and the land is burnt grey with
animals dying in the fields, crops
wilted, the South African sky white
with heat instead of brilliant blue.
What happened? Climate change, I
guess.
Do you hear an alarm bell? Well, all
is not lost. There are solutions to
the problems of living in a water
scarce country with huge food security issues, and they are surprisingly simple.
Firstly, a mind shift may certainly be
required. We are so used to going
to the shop that sells our food that
children don't even know that milk
comes from a cow and vegetables
actually grow in the soil. Time for
education I'd think, don't you?
We need to grow our own food
and learn to conserve every drop of
water that we can lay our hands on.
