His name lives on in plants encountered in the Agulhas Plain floristic region , for example the Albertinia pincushion ( Leucospermum muirii ) and the silverball conebush ( Leucadendron muirii ). Reflecting on the common names for the sugarbush named after Susanna Muir , we can assume that she would not prefer the stink leaf or the foetid-leaf to be attached to her name !
Maria Wilman ( 1867-1957 ) was ‘ n botanist , geologist and archaeologist of international fame and is still regarded as one of South Africa ’ s foremost pioneers in the sciences . This extraordinary woman ’ s research travels to the Northern Cape and her studies on the San and Khoi cultures piloted the publication of Rock engravings of Griqualand West and Bechuanaland ( 1933 ). In 1908 , she was appointed director of the McGregor Museum in Kimberley where her botanical research formed the inspiration for the Preliminary Checklist of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Griqualand West ( 1946 )
Maria Wilman ’ s inheritance include a number of plants named after her , such as the “ aaskelk ” ( carrion plant ) ( Stapelia wilmaniae ) and “ vlaktevygie ” ( Nananthus wilmaniae ). She is also recognised for die collection of “ hartjiesgras ” also known as love grass ( Eragrostis superba ). She also played an important role in the combat against erosion as well as soil preservation in Arizona , Oklahoma , Texas and Mexico by sharing her ideas on by sharing her ideas on rangeland improvement with farmers , ranchers , miners and scientists .
