FITTING THE PUZZLE PIECES TOGETHER You’re probably curious what exactly the puzzle pieces of storytelling are. (Drum roll, please.) Playing a vital role in the art of storytelling are… Writers: When it comes to storytelling, writers are the best. In fact, storytelling is what writers specialize in. Without a writer, storytelling isn’t possible. Contrast storytelling to the Gold Rush of 1849. Copywriters would’ve been the prospectors who went to the mine, searched endlessly for gold, and then polished it up once it was found. As a VistaComm journalist interviews you, they search for the “gold” in your story. Once that “gold” has been found, it becomes the writer’s job to take it from ideas to creation. The writer becomes the link between the client and the designer, meticulously crafting copy that will meet approval and be able to capture the overall creative vision of the piece. (Told you they’re the best.) Designers: Now that a vision has been born via written word, it’s time to bring it to life. Cue the designers, because visual impact is crucial when it comes to storytelling. (Don’t believe me? Check out Burke’s article on pages 6-7.) After all, if it weren’t for designers, the audience’s attention wouldn’t be captured. It’s like having bait but not putting it on the hook. (Good luck catching any fish without bait on your hook.) Designers are able to take the journalist’s “bait” and cast it out in a manner that’ll “hook” the audience into reading it. Editors: Without editors, we’d all look ridiculously stupid.
