PROJECT: Emergency Wharf Repair at North Embarcadero CONTRACTOR: R.E. Staite Engineering OWNER: Port of San Diego STRUCTURAL ENGINEER: Moffatt & Nichol PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This emergency project repaired the damage caused by the Hornblower docking incident on March 31, 2016. The above and below water/below grade inspection work, engineering design, demolition, and construction were executed over a 60-day period. The scope of work included temporary traffic control and the construction of a pedestrian walkway, removal of 1,200 square foot of pavers, and demolishing 30 feet of damaged concrete cap, wall and wale over water. Innovations included in-situ tie-rod testing, thereby minimizing excavation and enabling restoration of the original steel tie rods bent by the vessel impact.
