The Voice of Construction | ANNUAL REPORT 2017 | 5 AGC SAN DIEGO PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE In 2017, AGC San Diego Board of Directors began each meeting with a safety moment, just a few words of sharing designed to help each Board Member leave the meeting with an elevated awareness of workforce safety. Our AGC Board Members are all leaders of our industry, and their sharing of perspectives on safety was a great benefit. ERIC STENMAN T BALFOUR BEATTY CONSTRUCTION 2017 AGC SAN DIEGO PRESIDENT hank you for your interest in the AGC San Diego Annual Report. This report gives a great overview of the many activities our Chapter undertakes year in and year out – plus some special highlights unique to 2017! I have been honored to serve as the AGC San Diego President for the past year. I was able to see the full scope and reach of this Association’s many members. Let me share some of the highlights of the past year: • SAFETY is our industry’s license to operate. Back in the 1970’s when OSHA was founded, our industry suffered upwards of 1,000 work fatalities, and despite our advances in safety practices, fall protection, and preventing against the “Fatal Four,” our industry, nationwide, will register over 800 fatalities. We cannot make a rule for every action; it must be in our heart and in our mind. We must do our part every day to raise awareness to ensure that the working men and women in our industry go home in the same condition as when they arrived on the jobsite. • WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT was another goal for 2017 that ran on two tracks: first, capitalizing on the success of the CEM Program at SDSU, and, with the support of AGC, SDSU launched the development of the Construction Management curriculum for a new degree program. Representatives of the AGC are involved in the CEM chair selection committee, and the department won approval to hire two new positions to serve the CEM and CM programs. A nationwide search is underway for the permanent hires. Our San Diego member firms will benefit by both of these advances. • PREMIER HANDS-ON TRAINING. Over the past year, we have developed a plan working with the AGC Apprenticeship Program to undergo a major upgrade to our training facilities; the result is a $7 million project in Lakeside that will break ground in 2018. This state-of-the-art campus will be a premier hands-on-training center that will be the new home to apprentices and craft workers from the AGC, along with Western Electrical Contractors Association (WECA) programs. The modern facility will rival all competition, and provide the unique cross-trade training only available at AGC San Diego. It has been a wonderful experience to serve as the 2017 AGC President. It has been a busy and fulfilling year. I expect the momentum to continue into 2018 with the incoming AGC leadership. Thank you for the honor of serving as your 2017 AGC San Diego President. —Eric Stenman
