STYLE ON THE STREETS
WHAT 'S YOUR
Tribe ? ?
In Lagos, people wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear them.
Street wear may not have been born in Lagos but this city is definitely
a force to be reckoned with as far as style on the streets is concerned.
This doesn’t come as a surprise as it has since earned the pseudonym-
Africa’s capital a la mode.
Exploring the streets of Lagos will bring cities like New York, Paris,
Tokyo, London, maybe Copenhagen, to mind with its ever so
expressive fashion culture. From the young teaming with trends and
subcultures to the old - reviving fads, everyone is a looker.
Why? It’s the Lagosian’s ability to mix timeless and trendy pieces
for that infamous je ne sais quoi, it’s their ability to rock hyper hues
without the look of trying too hard, it’s the way they toss out the
fashion rule book to clash prints, above all, it’s the diversity in what
they’ve so chosen to call street style.
It’s this diversity that has made style on the streets of Lagos a hot
topic. For a while now, there have been ongoing conversations about
what should be accepted as street style in Lagos - should it be the alte
approach of Lagos’ new gen or the slightly more refined take by its
millennials? Spoiler — it is neither!
The myriads of peculiarities in style manifested on the streets of Lagos
go to prove that style here cannot be put in a box - Lagos’ fashionistas
are as diverse as they come. Unabashedly so. The city’s fashion
inclined have adopted the mixed genres approach making street
style all the more inclusive. From the print-crazed to minimalists,
there’s a street style tribe for everyone.
Lagos style is definitely unusual, but that’s what keeps us all so
interested!
