He advised government to invest in boxing by putting up well equipped gyms in local communities and districts, because Ghanaians naturally love boxing, and that investments he believes will yield more world champions, after the previous seven Ghana has produced; namely; D K Poison, ‘the pace setter’ who won the WBC Featherweight title belt in 1974, Azumah Nelson, WBC Featherweight/Super Featherweight champion, Nana Yaw Konadu -WBA Bantamweight champion, Ike Quartey, WBA Welterweight Champion, Alfred Kotey WBO Bantamweight champion, Joshua Clottey, IBF World Champion, Joseph Agbeko – former IBF bantamweight champion and Emmanuel “Game Boy” Tagoe-the current IBO Lightweight champion.

He commended the people who thought it wise to turn the rubbish dump near the Korle Lagoon into one of Africa’s best sports facilities.

“The construction of the arena will take Ghana Boxing to a higher level, there is a new wind blowing and we have very high hopes of producing more World Champions” he expressed.

Hakeem was simply amazing in the final round, as he displayed some fistic skills, working behind his stiff jabs and landing perfect punches. But Mensah never gave up as he also fought back. At the end of the fight, Hakeem was declared winner via a split decision. The 11 year-old silky boxer told the media he was happy with his performance:

“I’m impressed with my performance,” Hakeem said. “My opponent wasn’t a push over, he gave me a good fight. My father is a coach and has all the skills. I displayed what my dad taught me. I will continue to learn more so that in future I will become a world champion.”

Hakeem is product of Happy Days Preparatory School at James Town and wants to be a world champion.

Carl Lokko is the trainer of Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion, Duke Micah and Richard Commey, who is a top contender to the IBF Lightweight title and is also former Commonwealth Champion. He is also manager of the Bronx Gym at James Town in Accra.
