Boxing in Ghana On a Resurgence

This vibrant West African nation has always been the hope and beacon of Africa when it comes to boxing.

Ghana has produced great world champions since the 1970’s with David Kotei Poison a WBC Featherweight Champion blazing the trail, followed by Professor Azumah Nelson a WBC Featherweight/Super featherweight Champion in the 1980s, to Ike Quartey a WBA Welterweight Champion. In the wake of Ike Quartey was Alfred Kotey a WBO Bantamweight Champion in the 1990s, and then Joseph Agbeko an IBF Bantamweight Champion and in recent years Joshua Clottey an IBF Welterweight Champion.

Emmanuel Tagoe is the current IBO Lightweight Champion and there is also Richard Commey who did put up a wonderful performance in Ohio, USA recently only to lose the IBF Lightweight belt to American Boxer, Robert Easter Jr. in 2016.

Young Enterprising Isaac Dogboe aka ‘The Royal Storm’ is the current sensation with some continental belts. His eyes are on the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Council (WBC) Title belts and it is only a matter of time before he secures those belts.

Duke Micah the Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion is also a shining star to watch. He is an Olympian and wants to prove that the best boxers in Africa are in Ghana. Micah also holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver title.

“We take inspiration from our seniors like Professor Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey” he said.

Peter Zwennes, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) feels Ghana’s Boxing is on a revival and many great new things are happening.

He believes the revival has come with talents like Isaac Dogboe and Richard Commey and they are going to take the boxing world by storm.
