LANDSCAPING: GOLD AWARD WINNERS More winners of the South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) 2016 Awards of Excellence (click here for July Issue, pages 58-75) Compiled by Carol Knoll Monaghan farm A SIMPLE LANDSCAPE IN KEEP L andscape contractor Life Landscapes won a SALI Gold Award in the category Landscape Construction with Design by Others for Stand 68 Monaghan Farm, which is situated immediately north of Lanseria airport in Gauteng. The acclaimed estate combines the essence of farming with contemporary living... with its carefully positioned one-storey, low-slung homes in grassland (a typical pale yellow in these wintry scenes), its organic vegetables, herd of Nguni cattle, horses, and naturally occurring fauna and flora. Black-backed Jackals are plentiful and have bred on site, while Yellow Mongoose, Leopard Tortoises, Hedgehogs and other mammals and reptiles are found in this largely natural habitat. Fish Eagles have been on the farm for decades while, along with other raptors, there is a diversity of grassland birds. At absolute maximum, only 3% of the whole farm will comprise built structures. 36 africandesignmagazine.com Photographs:
