FLOWER A great flower of metal masses, made of a minus curved surface is installed in Archi-Fiore as a concept using “pop art”, and by doing so, the architects, Iroje KHM Architects, intended to enhance the identity of commercial buildings. International project Archi-Fiore T o respond to context and to give identity as a commercial building, the shape of this project has been curved like a flower. The architects expect that this complex building will be the architectural flower and landmark of the town. They extended the existing road in front of the site to this project which is the vertical town, consisting of complex programs of architecture, a coffee shop, restaurant, office and house. Dynamic stairways fly up from the first floor at the road level up to the roof garden at the top of 6th floor, strolling on various routes of this vertical town. Iroje KHM Architects didn’t want this complex building to be considered as one building, but rather a small town consisting of four independent buildings. Dialogue with round gymnasium and curved shape The most influential existence of the surrounding site is a huge, rounded gymnasium in the disorganized surrounding context. To create a dialogue with the round mass of the gymnasium, the architect designed this project as a curved shape which is derived from the curve of the traditional Korean roof. The curve of the roof Iroje KHM Architects hoped to give this project the identity of a commercial building, so applied the negative curve of the traditional roof of Korea to harmonize with the round gymnasium. In the house, they floated the curved mass of the family room over the living room, which looks and feels like a ‘floating roof’. africandesignmagazine.com 45
