T he Turkana Vaccination and Educational Clinic, Konokono, is a collaboration between MIT architecture students, Selgascano Architects, MCSPA, and the people of Turkana. Predicated upon the design and construction of a permanent vaccination and educational centre for the nomadic people of Turkana, the building serves as a broader platform for a higher level of socio-cultural exchange. The Turkana tribe is a first society living in the vast north-western region of Kenya, bordered by Uganda, South Sudan and Lake Turkana, whose context is an arid landscape where few animals live and only the toughest plants survive. Kokuselei, is a Turkana settlement where the Missionary Community of Saint Paul the Apostle provides services for the surrounding communities. This region was declared an anthropological reserve during the British rule, which rendered the Turkana community largely foreign to industrialization and other processes taking place in the rest of Kenya. 30 africandesignmagazine.com
