AZA18 ARCHITECTURE ZA 2018: WeTheCity Architecture ZA 2018 (#AZA18), Africa’s premier urban cultural festival focused on architecture, is taking place at 012Central in the Pretoria inner city from 3-5 May 2018. As excitement around the event mounts, African Design Magazine spoke exclusively to a number of the speakers, including Luyanda Mpahlwa, Vice-President of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), which hosts the event, and PPC’s Daniel van der Merwe. Co-hosted by the University of Pretoria (UP) and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), this three-day festival comprises two days of conference presentations and one day of tours and masterclasses. The programme will include keynote presentations, parallel sessions, student design sessions, films, and professional practice sessions. In 2018, the new PPC Imaginarium Awards for Architecture were launched, and all architecture schools in South Africa were invited to take part. The PPC Imaginarium Awards for Architecture will take place annually and will remain a stand-alone event held separately from the rest of the PPC Imaginarium Awards. The work of all entrants will be displayed at #AZA18, judged by the AZA18 Keynote speakers and the winner and runner-up will be announced on 3 May 2018. Under the theme ‘WeTheCity: Memory & Resilience’, the #AZA18 programme will focus on issues of design and practice concerning environmental potential, cultural heritage and human settlement. Members of the public, students, designers and artists, urban thinkers, economists, architectural and built environment professionals are encouraged to attend.
