Did you know that it takes a person 15 to 20 minutes to walk around the
Pentagon building once? While the buildings we focus on in this issue of
African Design Magazine may not be of the magnitude of the Pentagon,
they certainly stand out for their design capabilities.
33 Baker Street in Rosebank recently received a substantial facelift
with the demolition of its entire façade and roof structure to provide a
modern, contemporary look. The striking modulated curtain wall blends in
effortlessly with the satin sheen on the aluminium cladding and a textured
black on the plastered brick walls.
The Edge, a mixed-use development in Lagoon Beach, Cape Town will
provide occupants with an optimised user experience, marrying an
upmarket secure indoor environment with proximity to the nearby beach
and ocean.
Future Nation Schools focuses on stimulating teacher-learner interaction
by providing spaces engineered to engage learners in their own
educational process.
Still on education, Architecture ZA (AZA) 18 is Africa’s premier urban
cultural festival focused on architecture. Providing seasoned architects,
young architects and architectural students with the opportunity to
leverage a knowledge sharing platform, AZA is unrivalled in its ability
to prompt conversations around balancing socio-economic issues with
practical, aesthetically pleasing housing. ADM spoke to keynote speakers
and Masterclass presenters about this thought-provoking event.
The splendour of Victoria Falls has led to its classification as one of the
seven natural wonders of the world. Revitalisation of the town is currently
underway with hundreds of millions of US Dollars being poured into the
revamping of the airport, the creation of hotels and tourist attractions
and the building of a solar power plant, to name a few.
