The first step was consideration of the type of building materials used, to provide cost
effectiveness, coupled with safety. The second step looked at the use of vertical space. In the
townships, almost all houses are single storey. By raising the ground floor, the damage
caused by frequent flooding can be averted. By adding a second storey to a home, family
homes can be enlarged, and at the same time their footprint can be reduced.
The pilot project in Cape Town's Khayelitsha, then analysed each block and neighbourhood,
to implement a more rational street layout
ZEITZ MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART AFRICA (MOCAA) - South Africa
September 2017 saw the unveiling of the much heralded Zei Museum of Contemporary Art
Africa (Zei MOCAA) facility at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront.
It is the world's largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora
and is designed by internationally acclaimed designers Heatherwick Studio, based in
London.
Home to philanthropist Jochen Zei 's art collection, the museum contains over 80 cube-like
gallery spaces which are clustered around the museum's central atrium. The galleries and the
atrium space, at the centre of the museum, are carved from the silos' dense cellular structure
of 42 tubes.
Other elements within the building include a rooftop sculpture garden, modern storage and
conservation areas, a bookshop, a restaurant, bar, and reading rooms. The museum also
house Centres for a Costume Institute, Photography, Curatorial Excellence, the Moving
Image, Performative Practice and Art Education.
