Launch of SDG 6 indicator reports
The monitoring of progress towards SDG 6 is a means to making it happen .
High-quality data help policy- and decision makers at all levels of government to identify challenges and opportunities , to set priorities for more effective and efficient implementation , to communicate progress and ensure accountability , and to generate political , public and private sector support for further investment .
On 26 August , 2018 UN-Water launched seven reports that track progress towards the various targets set out in SDG 6 using the SDG global indicators :
• Safe Treatment and Use of Wastewater ( SDG indicator 6.3.1 , WHO and UN-Habitat )
• Ambient Water Quality ( SDG indicator 6.3.2 , UN Environment )
• Water-Use Efficiency ( SDG indicator 6.4.1 , FAO )
• Level of Water Stress ( SDG indicator 6.4.2 , FAO )
• Integrated Water Resources Management ( SDG indicator 6.5.1 , UN Environment )
• Transboundary Water Cooperation ( SDG indicator 6.5.2 , UNECE and UNESCO )
• Water-related Ecosystems ( SDG indicator 6.6.1 , UN Environment ) The reports are based on country data , compiled and verified by the United Nations agencies responsible , sometimes complemented by data from other sources .

SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation
In 2015 , UN Member States adopted the historic 2030 Agenda , setting universal and transformative goals and targets , and committing to working tirelessly for their full implementation . To ensure that no one is left behind , it will be vital to track progress towards the goals .
This is why Member States follow-up and review the 2030 Agenda and its 17 goals every year at the High-level Political Forum ( HLPF ). This event facilitates the sharing of experiences , including successes , challenges and lessons learned . It also provides political leadership , guidance and recommendations for follow-up .
To provide input to Member States on this goal , UN-Water has produced the SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation .. This represents a joint position from the UN family on the global status on SDG 6 and other waterrelated targets . The report also explores the linkages within SDG 6 targets and the interlinkages between SDG 6 and the other targets and indicators . The report builds on the baseline data on SDG 6 global indicators coming from JMP , GEMI and GLAAS .
