Hygiene Symptoms of lymphatic filariasis such as lymphedema (swelling) and accompanying secondary infections, occurring when germs enter the body through entry lesions (such as cracks in the skin and between the toes), can be managed by practicing basic principles of care such as simple hygiene, exercise, and treatment of wounds. Patients can be taught simple hygiene techniques for washing the affected body parts daily with soap and room temperature water, and keeping the nails and spaces between toes clean. When practiced regularly in conjunction with daily exercise of the affected limb and treatment of wounds, these hygiene measures have been shown to reduce the frequency of acute attacks . Mouro helps solve hygiene issues and remove odours at mosques Maintaining hygiene in a mosque can be something of a challenge because the building can be heavily used with, sometimes, thousands of people praying at the same time. High trafffic and odour are said to be the main issues when it comes to cleaning. Turnaco Robotik has developed a technological solution to this problem, with what it believes is ‘the world’s first mosque carpet hygiene robot’ - the Mouro. The company’s general manager, Kerem ?encan and CTO Vedat Tavas, explain: “This robot, which works autonomously and is controlled through a mobile phone app, is a complete cleaning system. It sweeps the carpet, disinfects it with UVC light and emits ozone to remove any bad smells.” The pair say they came up with the idea of producing a mosque cleaning r obot upon hearing about two elderly men who have breathing problems and cataracts, who experience added difficulties when attending their local mosques. Vectair Systems launches new P-Screen triple action urinal screen Global manufacturer and supplier of hygiene supplies Vectair Systems has launched the first triple action urinal screen - incorporating dual fragrance delivery, an active ‘enzyme protected’ central core and the ultimate defence against splashback. P-Screen first addresses fragrance fatigue, the common experience of losing sensitivity to an odour from over exposure, by providing powerful fragrance in two areas - the screen itself and the central core. A citrus-scented central core is complemented by three different fragrance choices: either Marine Musk, Linen Breeze or Citrus Mango. Dual fragrance is continually released for up to 60 days, and larger spaces can choose to co-ordinate scents with other Vectair Systems’ products to harmonize the environment. Secondly, its active central core provides impressive enzyme protection, containing naturally occurring bacteria that degrade organic matter, eliminating bad smells. This also reduces organic scale build-up by ensuring that uric salt is made more soluble, broken down and is therefore easier to flush away. The naturally occurring bacteria in P-Screen conforms to many European standards including Directive 2001/18/ EC and the Group 1 Directive 2000/54/EC for the release of organisms. Thirdly, its powerful ability to prevent splashback comes from a smart design combination of bubbles and bristles. Splashback is a common problem in men’s urinals, with unwanted amounts of urine often ending up on the floor. Bristles and bubbles help to reduce splashback by creating a surface upon which water cannot easily bounce, which prevents rebound. The P-Screen design is protected with a registered design mark so it is truly one of a kind. The urinal screen has been built to be flexible, using interlacing strips of EVA material to form a strong but bendable lattice. This means it comfortably fits most urinal shapes and sizes. It also has outstanding environmental credentials - it is 100% recyclable and VOC exempt. P-Screen is also an effective preventative measure to ensure that debris that could block the urinal, such as cigarettes, chewing gum and paper, is caught - preventing the build-up that could otherwise lead to costly maintenance and unsightly washrooms. A slightly raised grip pad means P-Screen can be easily lifted from the urinal by service personnel and replaced once the 60 days are up. “With P-Screen, we’ve joined together a whole host of features to create one ultimate urinal solution,” explains Paul Wonnacott, managing director at Vectair Systems. “This combination of a well-designed, fragrant and flexible screen, with an active central core, really does present a unique solution and can provide supreme protection to urinals in any setting, all over the world.” Africa Water, Sanitation & Hygiene • September 2018 29
