People Dr. Rose Kaggwa receives the 2016 IWA Women in Water Award! Rose Kaggwa is nominated as the recipient of the 2016 IWA Women in Water Award. She has worked in various management levels within the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) and is the Director of Business and Scientific Services. Rose is responsible for Capacity Development and Training, Dr. Rose Kaggwa Research and Development and External Services which is the NWSC Consultancy arm. She has 24 years’ of experience in the water sector. Rose has interfaced with various players in the water sector and has spearheaded partnerships in several countries that include: Bangaladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Trinidad and Tobago, India and Zambia. She has been a key player in the various performance improvement approaches applied in the NWSC at both managerial and supervisory level and has led the NWSC consultancy unit for the last 10 years. She is the current Second President of the African Water Association Scientific and Technical Committee. She is Vice President of the UNESCO – IHP Advisory Committee for Human settlement, water and sanitation. Her passion is capacity development and raising the profile of women in the water and sanitation sector. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Chemistry (Hons) from Makerere University, Uganda, a Master of Science degree in Water Quality Management, limnology and wetland ecology (with distinction) and a doctorate in Environmental Resources from UNESCOIHE Institute for Water Education, The Netherlands. International Water Association Announces new President The International Water Association (IWA) announced on 13 October 2016 in Brisbane, Australia that Diane d’Arras is the new President of the association. Diane has been an active member of the IWA for many years, and has served on the organization’s Board Diane d’Arras for the last six years. She takes over the role of president from Professor Helmut Kroiss. A civil engineer for nearly forty years, d’Arras is becoming President of the world’s 22 Africa Water, Sanitation & Hygiene • November - December 2016 largest international association of water professionals at a time of great challenges, changes and opportunities for addressing some of the most critical water issues facing humanity. Solving these challenges is one of Diane’s main motivations for working in the water sector, and for serving as IWA President. She is particularly concerned with solving the lack of access to water and sanitation worldwide. “There is a political momentum around water with the launch of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, which make a powerful commitment to ensure universal access to water and basic sanitation. We must also focus strongly on building water resilience for communities and cities that are increasingly impacted by climate change and water scarcity. Today we have both the political will and the professional solutions. The IWA has a vital role to play in delivering both of these agendas,” says Diane d’Arras. Diane’s election is a tribute to her career and to her commitment to ensuring a water-wise world, where water is sustainably managed for all human and environmental needs.
