Edible Utensils Can Cut Out Foodservice Waste and Pollution , Says Infiniti Research
Bakeys , an India-based company run by Narayana Peesapaty , has come up with a unique solution to the waste caused by foodservice disposables : utensils that you can eat . Bakeys currently offers spoons , sporks , and chopsticks that are made from a combination of millet , rice , and wheat flours , and come in variations of plain , sweet , and savoury .
The utensils won ’ t dissolve in liquids , even hot ones like soup , and can be eaten after use or thrown away , in which case they will decompose naturally and safely in just a few days . They are also veganfriendly and have a shelf life of up to three years . India disposes of roughly 120 billion pieces of plastic cutlery every year and is the world ’ s biggest user of foodservice disposables . Bakeys offers a realistic and affordable alternative that can radically improve environmental conditions in India and , as awareness grows , worldwide . Widespread use of edible cutlery will reduce the use of plastics , UVcured inks , Styrofoam , and other non-biodegradable materials commonly used in foodservice disposables , especially as it becomes adopted by fast food chains and food vendors .
