Editor’s Note Greetings and Happy New Year, It brings me great joy to present you all with the premiere issue of AFIYA Magazine, a publication dedicated to the enlightenment and empowerment of today’s cultural and professional woman. As with all ventures, AFIYA Magazine started out as just an idea, a thought. However, after some time, I began to realize that this magazine had the potential to be more than just another business venture. It could be a way to reach out to African American women as it relates to enhanced health and well-being. It could showcase and support women who are striving to better their families and communities both personally and professionally. It would serve to inspire my sisters to continue being phenomenal and beautiful. After that, I knew that this was the path I needed to embark on. In every issue of AFIYA Magazine, we will share information dealing with fitness and nutrition, lifestyle management, beauty, love, family and inspiration. Our aim is to support AFIYA readers on their journey towards complete wellness while shining light on women who are committed to success in both their personal and professional lives. For issue one, I had the pleasure of featuring Ona Hawk of Firehawk Yoga in Atlanta, Georgia. Ona and I met early last year, and I had no doubt in my mind that she would be a fantastic individual to feature in our premiere issue. Her story is a wonderful example of how the power lies within each of us to transform the state of our health and wellness. As AFIYA Magazine continues to grow, our goal is to feature more stories such as this one to keep our readers inspired and inclined to make better health and well-being choices while feeling empowered to do so. multitude of others who are also dedicated to the mission of enhancing the awareness of health & wellness topics important to African American women. Enjoy our premiere issue, and stay tuned for all that we have planned. With Gratitude, I am extremely appreciative of every person who assisted in making this premiere issue a success, and I thank all of our future readers. I look forward to working and sharing with a 4 | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 AFIYA MAGAZINE
