Are we all in this together? WHAT MEDIA ADVISERS CAN LEARN FROM WORLD CHAMPION COACHING PHILOSOPHIES By Jack Kennedy, MJE L ots of great teachers point out the parallels between great athletic coaching and great advising, and that point was reinforced for me by a May 29, 2017 Sports Illustrated story by Chris Ballard, titled “Steve Kerr’s Absence: The True Test of a Leader.” Kerr’s team, the Golden State Warriors, was about to win a second world championship in three years, so it’s no wonder people are interested in how he has reached and maintained such success. The news peg was the fact that the team was 46-4 over two seasons WITHOUT Kerr on the sidelines (due to health issues). The article explored the how and why of Kerr’s coaching philosophy, but it was also a short course on how to be a terrific media adviser (and a terrific teacher generally).
