Depending on your experience, you may classify yourself accordingly and
set out for a fun summertime hike this season. If you are just starting out,
you’ll be a Class One, and you will want to stick to established trails. If you
are fairly physically active and you would like to try Class Two but have
never been on that type of trail, then you will want to invest in some hiking
boots and probably a guide. Guides come in handy when trying out new
activities, especially when you are in an unfamiliar area.
Be sure to always take a friend with you or hike in a group if you aren’t
going to be with a guide. Make a laminated hard copy of the area map
for yourself to keep in your pack. Bring basic survival gear along with you
as well, such as a compass and a fire starting kit. When you are out in the
wilderness, whether you are just going for a day hike or a leisure walk for
a few hours, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
