Regarding Stroud’s early life, he quickly became interested in nature and the outdoors as a child. It was through innocent pastimes, such as watching Tarzan and Jacques Cousteau, that his inner desire to know the outdoors came about. Unmistakably drawn to the wilderness, it wasn’t long before he was in the bush, learning hands-on how to forge through nature’s obstacles. Stroud was born in Mimico, Ontario, Canada on October 20, 1961. When he graduated from high school, he went on to Fanshawe College to receive a degree in the arts. As a young adult, he involved himself further in the outdoors by becoming a nature guide and teaching survival courses, as well as conducting tours through the Canadian wilderness for groups. He met his wife, Susan Jamison, during one of these courses and they married in 1994. They have two children together and live “the cottage life” on a beautiful secluded property in Canada. Whether he is combating the cold weather in the Arctic, or sweating through survival on a desert island, Les Stroud has proven his abilities in the world of the wild as a man who will risk everything to stay alive. He is the epitome of will power 62 Summer 2015 Adventure Outdoors and a model of primitive strength. He continues to inspire many and teaches those who are willing to learn. He is an active member of the Explorer’s Club and donates much of his earnings to charities across the world. His work is unmatched and his knowledge is rich and full of tactics we could all take note of. Les Stroud is the Terminator of the wild; if he ever reached for our hands and said, “Come with me if you want to live,” we would scramble to go with him. Les Stroud has made his mark on the outdoor society and will continue to do so for years to come. His accomplishments have shown the globe that anything is possible and all dreams are achievable, even if you’ve only got a multi-tool to work with.
