FISHING Hot Spots Canadian Province of Ontario. At Lake Michigan, look for the salmon, among the other species. Lately, they’ve been plentiful and many tourists are traveling there for these fishing waters alone. Lake Erie is home to steelheads, walleye, and smallmouth bass, and success rates are off the charts. The calm waters allow for relaxed fishing and fly fishing as well. Within the Great Lakes, you can canoe or kayak through the surface and scout out your individual hot spots. Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes, so its name is fitting. The water holds perch and giant trout for fishing, and the occasional northern pike, which are all available year round. Lake Superior is the world’s third largest freshwater lake and absolutely the largest by volume in North America. New York The Great Lakes continue into New York, like Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, which provide some of the best walleye fishing around. Take a trip to Lake Oneida and Otisco Lake for some of the fattest and most prized tiger muskies and yellow perch in the state. These calm, dark waters are sought after by many anglers in the early spring and summer as the best time to catch a winning game fish. Traveling along the state, we come to Wellesley Island State Park. Here, you’ll be sure to notice Lake of the Isles, which is actually a bay, and is slam-packed with panfish. Fly fishing here is almost a must, as 32 Summer 2015 Adventure Outdoors these fish will swallow the tail in an instant. Reeling them in is when the work begins. You can even go fishing for sport in Manhattan, such as the 107th Street Pier, which is 270 feet long and lighted for convenience. All fish caught here are catch-and-release though, as they are swimming in a high-traffic waterway and not the best for eating. Try Forge Pond in Long Island, a branch of the Peconic River that offers up a consistent current and a variety of exceptionally-sized game fish. Here, you can expect to reel in large pickerel, walleye and big bass. The beautiful, semi-still water is perfect for casting a line from a small boat and enjoying the sunshine during the summer.
