Nestled in the foothills of the Ap-
palachian Mountains, Dawsonville,
Georgia is located 60 miles north of
Atlanta and is the perfect escape for
outdoor adventurers.
Home to the beginning of the South-
ern Terminus Trail, Amicalola Falls
State Park is your gateway to the Ap-
palachian Trail. Whether you are an
experienced trekker or day hiker,
Dawsonville provides a connection to
the longest hiking-only trail in the
world, ranging from Georgia to Maine.
The Adventure Lodge at Am-
icalola Falls State Park offers zi-
plining, archery, survival skills,
guided hikes and more. De-
riving its name from the
Cherokee word meaning
“tumbling waters,” Amicalola
Falls is the tallest cascading
waterfall east of the Missis-
sippi (729 feet). The on-site
Lodge features rooms with
scenic views and an award-win-
ning restaurant.
Five miles north of Amicalola Falls sits the
Len Foote Hike Inn. Georgia’s only back-
country lodge is accessible by hiking a
5-mile trail. With an emphasis on conser-
vation and sustainability, the Hike Inn pro-
vides rustic charm in a relaxed and
beautiful setting that allows families to
enjoy nature together.
If the challenge of a hunt is more your thing,
Etowah Valley Sporting Clays & Game
Preserve offers guided hunts for pheas-
ant, chukka and quail, or you can
test your aim at one of their multiple
sporting clays courses.
Feeling called to the water? The
Amicalola and Etowah rivers and
Lake Lanier offer a multitude of ex-
periences, including finding unique
varieties of native fish. Paddlers
particularly enjoy the Amicalola
River rapids, which range from Class
II-IV+ and include the scenic Edge of
the World rapids. Gear and guides
are available locally from Outside
World Outfitters and Ap-
palachian Outfitters.
