Bishop: a mecca for
outdoor enthusiasts
and photographers
Whether you’re a leaf peeper, a hiker, biker, climber, fish-
erperson or someone seeking solitude, escape for a
multi-day adventure with just you and your backpack. It’s
a small town with modern amenities, including free Wi-Fi
downtown. Lodging ranges from quite luxurious to clean
and quaint, as well as public and private campgrounds
in abundance.
Bishop has been described as “California’s Hidden
Treasure.” Located 4 hours from any major city, it is worth
the trip. The rural isolation is part of the charm and reason
that folks return to visit year after year.
Bishop Creek Canyon is a place not to be missed. This
short, 15-minute journey west of Bishop on US Highway
168 (West Line Street) will take you well into the rugged
high country. Bishop Creek Canyon is one of the most
spectacular places for fall colors in California – if not the
country. At the head of each fork is a large lake, North
Lake, Lake Sabrina at middle, and South Lake, as well as
an extensive system of trails. The views at each lake
basin are mesmerizing for the sheer magnitude of the
surrounding crags and the swaths of brilliant color that
appear to flow out of the rock toward the deep blue
water like lava.
March 17, 2018 marks the 50 th anniversary of the Blake
Jones Trout Derby – one of the state’s largest single day
derbies! Ten thousand dollars in prizes, and it’s a blind
bogey, so everyone has equal chance of taking home
fishing equipment, float tubes, gift certificates, and cash.
This is an experience not to be missed!
