City Creek Trail System is 52-miles of
maintained trails for hikers and bik-
ers on the doorstep of the west
bench. The Portneuf Greenway trails
run through the city for thirteen miles
along the Portneuf River and lead to
public land trailheads that surround
the city. To the south, catch a rain-
bow trout in the Edson Fichter Na-
ture area pond or stroll the trails
along the river. To the north, the 80-
acre Portneuf Wellness Complex of-
fers trails, basketball courts, soccer
fields, a large fishing pond with a
beach for swimming, as well as an
amphitheater for summer concerts.

Each Labor day weekend, the Pocatello
Marathon heralds the beginning of au-
tumn. Celebrating its 18 th year, the
marathon remains popular because of
its fast-pace and scenic route. as a
Boston Marathon qualifier, it attracts par-
ticipants from all over the U.S. and the
world. another fall tradition is the na-
tion’s oldest rock-climbing competition,
the “Pocatello Pump,” held each Sep-
tember. Rock-climbers scale as many
routes as they can on the “Shady” or
“Sunny” side of the basalt lava cliffs of
Ross Park during two days of laughter
and comradery. Known for its copious
swag and the community it brings to-
gether, climbers travel from all over to
participate annually.

south, the forests of Mink Creek and
