In Sierra Vista, Arizona, September means summer. Days hover around 75 degrees and
endless blue skies melt into starry nights. The grasslands are belly-high green waves and a
second annual profusion of wildflowers adds pops of color.
Tucked against the Huachuca Mountains at 4,633 feet, Sierra Vista enjoys cool autumn
nights. Aspen groves, sycamore, and oak at higher elevations are decking out in autumn
gold. Mild temperatures are the norm for Sierra Vista’s winter, with December and January
days averaging about 50 degrees.
Miles of quiet roads, designated bike lanes, and nearby single-track mountain trails—along
with the temperate climate—make Sierra Vista a terrific destination for winter training and
getaways from cold northern winters.
The Huachuca Mountains reach a soaring 9,465 feet with some pretty
steep trails for the hearty hiker, although plenty of gentler trails still
rate high with mountain bicyclists and hikers alike. And one of the
easiest routes (and perhaps most peaceful trail) is the path along the
San Pedro River. This
