Many of the area ’ s summer hot spots cool down in the winter months , naturally transforming themselves into coldweather destinations . Hiking and biking trails evolve into cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails . Lakes that were busy with paddlers and boaters become prime areas for ice fishing . Many still hike through the woods during the winter months , but this time they are lugging their hunting gear .
The Ghost Town Trail , which is the most popular trail that runs through Cambria County , is a National Recreation Trail and is ranked as one of the best hiking trails in America . The 46-mile trail weaves through 19 th century coal towns and provides visitors with an opportunity to enjoy historical structures and interpretive markers . During the winter months , it is common to see the trail utilized for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing .
If your interests draw you more towards the water , check out the 1,635-acre , Glendale Lake .
Fishermen enjoy the cold weather challenge of catching perch , walleye , pike , and crappie . Also permitted in the immediate area is iceboating , snowmobiling , and cross-country skiing .
Last , but certainly not least , hunters can enjoy the county ’ s 90,000 acres of state game lands . If you ’ re seeking white-tailed deer , bear , and pheasant , check out State Game Land 58 which features 12,646 acres of mountain terrain . If you ’ re on the hunt for wild turkey , State Game Land 226 encompasses 4,225 acres of rolling farmland .
