Boy Scout Resident Camps—Camp Meriwether
14
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Meriwether’s activities emphasize the historic
Lewis and Clark expedition, and feature blacksmithing, muzzle-loading, shotgun
shooting, climbing and lots more. Camp Meriwether boasts a full-scale replica
of Fort Clatsop, the winter quarters of Lewis & Clark built in 1805 during their
momentous adventure. Staff members in this program area dawn period regalia
and help Scouts learn about Lewis & Clark and their Corps of Discovery. Scouts
even get to try out old-time skills like black-smithing and candle making. The
area also features a black-powder rifle range, which is a favorite of Scouts. Mer-
iwether, being right on the beach, is a great place for nature lovers. Oceanogra-
phy Merit Badge is one offering that sets this camp apart from most in the coun-
try, as is ocean-surf wading and the only Polar Bear Swim in the Pacific Ocean
in the BSA. Many Scouts hike out to the end of Cape Lookout, a rock peninsula
that juts out one mile into the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether treats Scouts and adults with tasty meals in a spacious din-
ing hall that accommodates 600 diners and a centrally located 44 foot climbing tower tops Meriwether’s list of high
adventure activities. For a great Scouting adventure at a classic Scout camp, Meriwether is hard to beat!
