Traditional festivals

Most festivals celebrated in Turkey have to do mostly with religion and are determined by the lunar calendar, as it is common in Muslim traditions .

- Seker Bayrami (Sugar Festival): It is celebrated after the fasting month of Ramadan.

- Kusban Bayrami (Sacrifice Festival): In this four-day festival, Abraham is honoured for being willing to sacrifice his son Isaac to honour Allah . So this holiday begins with the sacrificing of an animal and during these four days families usually take the opportunity to meet and be together.

Other non religious festivals are also celebrated

- Day of national sovereignty and children's day. It is celebrated the 23rd of April

- Commemoration of Atatürk , Youth and Sport Day . It is held on the19th of May and it commemorates

the beginning of the war of independence (1919 )

- Victory Day . It is held on the 30th of August and it commemorates one of the decisive victories during the war of independence (1922)

- Day of the Republic. It is held on the 29th October and it commemorates the independence of Turkey and the amendment of the constitution (1923 ) .

Curiosities

- The first man who flew the world was Turkish and it was in the seventeenth century. He used to two artificial

wings and flew from the Galata Tower in Istanbul to Üsküdar district .

- The remains of Noah’s Ark are said to be on top of Mount Ararat, but this hasn´t been verified by anyone.

- St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) lived as bishop of Myra in Demre

- Many names of places like Philadelphia , Paris or Trojan have their origin in Turkey.

- In Turkeywe can find the oldest landscape painting in history, which shows the eruption of a volcano and has

8000 years ( in Çatalhöyük ) .

- The King Midas was from the region of Anatolia.

- The Turkish national sport is Yağlı, and it has been so since the Ottoman era.

- Pamukkale is one of the most spectacular regions of Turkey.
