Sinus membrane perfora ons and the incidence of complica ons: a retrospec ve study from a residency
program—Kyle Shiffler, BS, David Lee, BS, Tara Aghaloo, DDS, MD, PhD, Peter K. Moy, DMD, Joan Pi‐
Anfruns, DMD
Objec ve: The purpose of this study is to evaluate sinus membrane perfora ons and the incidence of
complica ons in a residency program.
Study Design: Data from 107 consecu ve direct sinus augmenta on procedures were reviewed retro‐
spec vely from 2008 to 2012.
Discussion: All perfora ons were repaired intraopera vely with the use of a collagen tape. Intraopera‐
ve membrane perfora ons were observed in 64 of 107 cases (59.8%). Of the perfora ons, 58 were less
than 5 mm in diameter and 6 were 5 mm or greater in diameter. It was found that there were 6 cases
(5.6%) that experienced postopera ve complica ons. Of those, 3 occurred in cases with no perfora ons,
2 with perfora ons less than 5 mm in diameter, and 1 with a perfora on 5 mm or more in diameter.
These differences were not sta s cally significant (P > .05). All observed post‐opera ve complica ons
were related to symptoms of acute infec on.
Conclusions: Although membrane perfora on was a frequent intraopera ve finding, there was no evi‐
dence that the presence and size of membrane perfora on influences the likelihood of postopera ve
complica ons.
