EQUITY OF CARE PROJECT
The MHA program of the Texas A&M University Health Science Center?s School of Public Health recently hosted
an Equity of Care Project program featuring keynote speaker Tomas Leon, President for the Institute for
Diversity. Mr. Leon kicked off the campaign to improve the equity within healthcare. The American Hospital
Association is spearheading a drive to increase awareness of the need to eliminate the many health disparities
found in all sectors of the delivery system. Hospitals and systems are being asked to sign a pledge to
eliminate these disparities and to show their efforts at continuous work to eliminate inequities. The discussion
initiated by Tomas focused on what associations and other groups of healthcare leaders outside of the
individual facilities and delivery system components could do to support the Equity of Care Project. He
suggested that endorsing the campaign for #123forEquity and encouraging the affiliates of the organizations
to continue to focus their organizations on this important work would be a major step forward.
Representatives of ACHE- SouthEastTexasChapter (ACHE- SETC), National Association of Health Services
Executives (NAHSE), Asian Health Leaders Forum (AHLF), National Forum Latino Healthcare Executives (NFLHE),
and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Forum (LGBT) commented about what their professionals
groups are doing to address the health disparities in the healthcare delivery system.
