SEPTEMBER | FEATURE Keeping cricket on message The Creative Technology team was responsible for the full management and delivery of the in-ground large screens contract for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which ran from the end of May to mid-July C overing 12 Cricket grounds across the UK for a period of six weeks, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 played host to the very best Cricket teams in the world and delivered over 50 days of consecutive live game action. Creative Technology’s relationship with the ECB and the ICC for Cricket in the UK has spanned more than 10 years. During this time the scope of service and the technology employed from Creative Technology has evolved significantly with both parties continuously striving to deliver display and content management solutions. This was evident at the 2019 Cricket World Cup where Creative Technology delivered real time live action video, statistics and up to dates scores and a whole range of promotional, advertising and general messaging to the audiences within the grounds. LED Screen Provision The core activity at the heart of the project was for the delivery of large LED screens into the cricket grounds as live replay and scoreboard relays. These were provided where the individual grounds do not have a screen installed on site or where an additional screen was needed to be added to match the ICC requirement. The screens deployed were both modular and mobile units with the type being dependent on the location and other variables such as access and space. Creative Technology’s experience garnered through many years working at the venues selected for the ICC Cricket World Cup allied with Creative Technology’s close working relationship with the ECB ensured that this was a straight forward process for the ICC. Support structures and general infrastructure In support of the screen provision Creative Technology also provided screen support structures which were designed and built as bespoke units specifically to match the requirement of the screens they support. This part of the service was provided to grounds in Headingly, Yorkshire – Glamorgan, Wales and Edgbaston, Birmingham. Content management and generation In order to manage and deliver content to the LED displays Creative Technology also delivered a medium sized outside broadcast vehicle, located in the main OB compound during matches this was the platform for the video team to deliver a bespoke feed tailored to the need of the spectators. Live feeds were taken from the main Sky TV OB unit, Hawkeye and other stadium-based locations and additional content and footage was generated by our own camera personnel. From these feeds the Creative Technology team created a live programme combining live footage, player and game information, action replays and pre-shot/edited infill programmes and highlights features. The resulting outcome was a streamlined series of live coverage run across the full six-week project duration providing engaging, interesting and exciting LED output that fully engaged the audiences and built interest and understanding in the live ICC Cricket World Cup games throughout the competition. 19
