No part of this publication can be reproduced in any form without written authority of Mash Media. E ngland, as I write, have progressed into the Quarter Finals of the FIFA World Cup. My Whatsapp groups are more prolific than usual, and I’m getting ample comedy mileage from the various ‘It’s coming home’ memes lighting up my phone. Easily amused as I am. Frankly though, I don’t remember a big event feeling this damn good for a while. At work we banter about the sweepstakes, at home my parents are becoming mini-Linekers, on the train I see suburban Surrey awash with Sports Direct-bought St George flags. Being happily echo chambered in this fragile bubble of national ‘feels’ no doubt made me more hyped to be at a recent Major Events International Summit in Liverpool. Hearing the inspirational, and technical, details of events including Tokyo 2020, Cricket World Cup 2019 and the Invictus Games from the people in charge (p30) bought home how much netting these major contracts means for our industry. No great Proustian insight is intended from all this. Basically, when people get together it can be great, and when lots of people get together it can be even greater. If the content herein inspires you to make your events better, then we’re all winners.
