UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

Students study about discrimination and apply research techniques for discovery and analysis. Dr. Martinez explains “As the last part of this assignment and to incorporate some of the tools learned, students are asked to locate an actual case of labor market discrimination decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. They will comment on the majority and dissenting opinion, pick a side, and provide support for their choice.” He noted, “The desired outcome of this assignment is that students learn about several of the resources available to them at the library and, more importantly, that they learn about the differences between academic and non-academic sources used in their research.” In addition, “I was happily surprised to learn that students do understand and value these differences to be applied to their research projects.” said Dr. Martinez.

Dr. Corina Benavides Lopez offers a course on “Brown and Black Educational Experiences” which is an interdisciplinary course designed to provide students opportunities to investigate and explore the contemporary educational experiences of Latina/and African American/Black youth. Students analyze diverse issues of these communities which led to social divisions that influence educational outcomes of these populations.

In the following video Dr. Benavides Lopez discusses what students would learn by the end of the course.
